Two acids dominate the exfoliation shelf, and they are constantly mistaken for each other. Glycolic acid is an AHA. Salicylic acid is a BHA. They are not interchangeable, and choosing the wrong one is the most common reason an exfoliant seems to do nothing — or leaves skin tight and irritated.

Key takeaways

  • AHAs such as glycolic acid are water-soluble and work on the skin's surface — best for dullness, rough texture and uneven tone.
  • BHAs such as salicylic acid are oil-soluble and work inside the pore — best for congestion and blemishes.
  • Glycolic acid has the smallest molecule of the common AHAs, so frequency matters more than chasing a higher percentage.
  • Both raise sun sensitivity. Daily broad-spectrum SPF is not optional.
  • You can use both — just not stacked in the same layer on the same night.

AHA vs BHA: the one difference that matters

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are water-soluble. Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) are oil-soluble. That single property decides where each acid can travel.

Because water and sebum do not mix, a water-soluble AHA stays on the surface of the skin, loosening the bonds that hold dull, dead cells in place so they shed evenly. An oil-soluble BHA can pass through sebum and reach the inside of the pore, which is where congestion actually forms.

So the useful question is not which acid is stronger. It is: where is my problem? A surface problem calls for an AHA. An inside-the-pore problem calls for a BHA.

Glycolic acid benefits: what an AHA actually does

Glycolic acid is the smallest AHA molecule, which is why it acts quickly. Used consistently, a glycolic acid exfoliator targets:

  • dullness and lack of radiance
  • rough, uneven texture
  • uneven skin tone and visible build-up

Percentage alone is a poor guide, though. A well-built formula pairs the acid with humectants so skin is not left stripped. Our Glycolic Acid Liquid Exfoliator is built that way: glycolic acid to resurface, glycerin, betaine and sodium PCA to replenish moisture and support barrier function, and cranberry and lingonberry extracts for antioxidant support.

If you prefer a periodic, higher-intensity treatment to a regular liquid, the AHA Peeling Concentrate uses 10% lactic acid — a larger, gentler AHA molecule — with 1% hyaluronic acid. We compare the two formats in our guide to precision exfoliation.

Salicylic acid: what a BHA actually does

Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it gently exfoliates inside the pore to help clear blemishes and discourage future breakouts. That makes it the logical choice for congested, blemish-prone and oilier areas rather than for overall dullness.

In our Acne Spot Care, salicylic acid is paired with kaolin clay and charcoal to draw out impurities and reduce excess oil, organic tea tree oil and aloe vera to calm redness and irritation, and argan oil and glycerin so treated areas do not end up flaking. It is a targeted treatment — applied directly to blemishes on clean, dry skin, once or twice daily as needed — not an all-over exfoliant.

Which one should you choose?

  • Dull, rough, uneven tone — glycolic acid, used across the face.
  • Blackheads, congestion, blemishes — salicylic acid, on the areas that need it.
  • Both concerns at once — use both, but separate them (see below).
  • Sensitive or easily reactive skin — start at a lower frequency, or begin with a larger-molecule AHA such as lactic acid.

How to use glycolic acid without irritation

  1. Cleanse, then pat skin dry.
  2. Apply to face and neck with a cotton pad or fingertips, avoiding the eye area.
  3. Use in the evening, two to four times per week — not every night.
  4. Follow with a moisturiser.
  5. Wear broad-spectrum SPF every morning.

That last step is the one most people skip. Exfoliating acids increase sun sensitivity, and exfoliating without daily sun protection can worsen the very unevenness you set out to fix. An SPF50 sunscreen stick makes reapplying straightforward.

Can you use glycolic acid and salicylic acid together?

Yes — just not stacked in the same layer on the same night. Two approaches that work:

  • By zone: glycolic acid as your all-over evening exfoliant, salicylic acid as a spot treatment on blemishes.
  • By night: alternate. Glycolic acid one evening, your other active another evening, and at least one recovery night with neither.

If skin feels tight, looks shiny and red, or stings when you apply moisturiser, you are over-exfoliating. Scale back to once a week and build up again slowly.

Frequently asked questions

Is glycolic acid or salicylic acid better for dark spots?

Glycolic acid, generally. It works across the surface of the skin, which is where uneven tone and post-blemish marks sit. Salicylic acid is better at discouraging the breakouts that leave those marks in the first place.

Can I use glycolic acid every day?

Our formula is designed for two to four evenings a week. Daily AHA use is unnecessary for most people and raises the risk of a compromised skin barrier.

Which comes first if I use both?

Treat salicylic acid as a targeted step after cleansing, on its own nights. Do not layer it straight over a fresh glycolic acid application.

Is salicylic acid safe during pregnancy?

Guidance varies, and this is a question for your own doctor or midwife rather than a skincare brand. Please speak to a healthcare professional about any active ingredient if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or managing a diagnosed skin condition.
